The final event on the Basketball Tasmania 2009 State Championship calendar, the State Primary School Championship, has drawn the best 24 teams from around the state to Hobart’s Moonah Sports Centre over the coming weekend.
The titles are played in four divisions, junior girls and boys (grades 3 and 4) and senior girls and boys (grades 5 and 6) and the 24 teams involved have all earned the right to participate in the event by finishing either first or second in their division in their respective regional championships which were played last month.
Matches will be played on all three courts at the Moonah Sports Centre from 9.30am tomorrow (Saturday) with the day’s final games finishing at around 8.30pm. Sunday’s playoff action tips off with semi-finals at 9.00am with the finals commencing at 1.00pm (Junior Girls and Senior Boys) and 2.00pm (Junior Boys and Senior Girls). In all, 48 games will be played over the weekend.
Teams will travel from as far afield as Queenstown, Somerset and Wynyard with further teams coming from Burnie, Dodges Ferry and Penguin as well as Launceston and Hobart.
The best-represented school in the competition is West Launceston which has qualified teams in three of the four divisions. Sacred Heart and Corpus Christi from the south and St Joseph’s (Queenstown) and Somerset from the North West have all qualified two teams.
Schools which are represented by a single team at the finals weekend are St Virgil’s, Dodges Ferry, Dominic, Mt Stuart and Lindisfarne from the south, Grammar, Scotch Oakburn, Trevallyn, and East Launceston from the north and Table Cape, Stella Maris (Burnie), Burnie and Penguin from the North West.
