Revised Timing Rule - U14 Shot Clock

This email is to confirm a variation to the shot clock regulations which was introduced for the Australian U14 Club Championships in 2009 and is now to be introduced for state level and below competition.

The variation is with regard to the shot clock not commencing until the ball has progressed into the team’s front court.

The reason for this is to enhance the development of offensive skills at this age group. With the traditional 24 second clock, teams often only have 17-18 seconds in the front court, which invariably means that one or two players will have the majority of the offensive play.

By providing teams with 24 seconds in their front court, greater opportunity for team play will be available.

The shot clock will reset on a shot, as normal. However, the shot clock will be stopped if the defensive team get the ball, until they have progressed to their half court. The definition of the ball progressing to the team’s frontcourt is when:

·         A player is dribbling the ball from the backcourt to the frontcourt, has both feet and the ball in contact with the frontcourt.

·         The ball is caught by a player who has at least one foot in the front court (when passed from the backcourt);

·         If a pass is thrown from the backcourt which lands in the front court (before being caught).

The team still has only eight seconds to progress the ball from the back court to the front court and this count will be governed by the referee. If the player has one or both feet in the front court and is still dribbling in the backcourt the referee will continue to count the eight seconds until the ball has progressed into the front court.

If the ball is knocked back into the backcourt after the ball has already progressed into the team’s front court the shot clock will remain running.

This rule should now be implemented for all under 14 competitions where the shot clock is used.  It would also technically apply to competitions below under 14 however it would be extremely unlikely (and undesirable) for the shot clock to be in use.

Please contact me if there are any queries.

Regards
