Greater Hobart has clinched its sixth under 18 men’s basketball title since 2002 with a solid ten point win over Launceston in last weekend’s state titles at the Elphin Sports Centre in Launceston.
In the women’s division, Ulverstone had its first taste of success since 2003 when it posted a six point grand final win over Greater Hobart while the division 2 titles went to Burnie men and Wynyard women.
The Launceston division 1 men’s team started well and at the end of the first quarter, had almost doubled Greater Hobart’s score to give their association its first sniff of a title in a decade.
However the southern combination gradually fought its way back to narrow the margin to a single point at the long break before grinding its way to a seven point advantage heading into the final term and then pulling away to a ten point win.
After defeating Ulverstone by 21 points in a pool game on Saturday, Greater Hobart went into the division 1 women’s final full of confidence and after a good start, it looked to be well on the way when it led by ten points at quarter-time and by 17 points at the half.
But it failed to allow for the Red Hoppers’ fighting spirit which saw Ulverstone post a massive 46 – 23 second half, giving it a six point victory.
